Aran Weight: Warm, cozy, with history

Aran Weight is named after the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland – where fisherwomen have been knitting thick, textured sweaters for generations that withstand wind and rain. The weight carries this spirit: strong, warm, robust. Using Needle Size 5–6mm, you create sweaters that truly warm – and hats that are finished in less than two hours.

What is Aran Weight?

Aran Weight (also known as Heavy Worsted in the American system) typically has a Meterage of about 150–200 meters per 100g. The standard Needle Size is 5–6mm, and the gauge in stockinette stitch is about 16–18 stitches per 10cm. Aran is therefore heavier than Worsted (4.5–5.5mm) and finer than Chunky/Bulky (7mm+).

An Aran sweater is not a quick project – but significantly faster than in DK or Fingering. For adult sweaters, you typically need 500–800g. A simple hat can be knitted in an evening.

The Aran Tradition: Cables, patterns, and texture

Aran Weight is especially well suited for textured patterns: the classic Aran cables, honeycomb patterns, diamond motifs, and arch patterns stand out particularly vividly in this weight. The yarn has enough substance to clearly show every relief detail – and enough body so the patterns keep their shape even after washing.

The traditional Aran sweaters from Ireland are knitted in genuine Aran Weight – from undyed Irish wool, with deeply textured patterns that originally gave each fishing family its own distinctive design. Today, Aran-inspired patterns are of course also knitted in color – but the strong, textured character of the weight always remains recognizable.

Aran Weight for beginners

Aran Weight is an excellent weight for anyone who likes larger needles and wants to see quick progress. The stitches are clearly visible and easy to count, mistakes are easy to spot and fix. Simple Aran projects without complex cable patterns – for example, a stockinette sweater or a brioche hat – are also well suited for beginners.

Our Aran Weight Yarns at BONIFAKTUR

Our assortment in the Aran range includes natural wool and blended yarns in robust quality. For traditional, textured Aran patterns, we recommend virgin wool yarns with natural grip – this slight resistance of the fibers helps cable stitches hold their shape.

For cozy comfort in modern sweaters without elaborate textured patterns, softer blended yarns are suitable. Our recommendation: always knit a gauge swatch – Aran Weight varies slightly depending on the manufacturer, and a correct gauge determines the final size and comfort of your project.
