DK Weight: The All-Rounder Among Yarn Weights
DK – Double Knitting – is the medium weight that many call their favorite. Not too thin for large projects, not too thick for delicate textures. Using 3.5–4.5mm Needle Size, you can create sweaters, hats, jackets, and accessories at a comfortable working speed with clear Stitch Definition. DK is the sweet spot: fast enough to keep motivation, fine enough for details.
What is DK Weight?
"Double Knitting" (DK) is a term from the British knitting system describing a medium-weight yarn that is twice as thick as a typical Fingering yarn. Using Needle Size 3.5–4.5mm, it produces pieces with a gauge of about 20–24 stitches per 10cm in stockinette stitch. This is a bit looser than Fingering (28–32 stitches) but noticeably finer than Aran (16–18 stitches).
A 100g ball of DK typically has 200–250 Meters of Meterage. For a simple adult hat, you need about 100g; for a simple sweater in size M, about 400–600g depending on the construction.
What projects are suitable for DK?
DK is especially popular for Stranded Colorwork: The weight is large enough to make colors and patterns clearly visible, yet fine enough for complex motifs with many stitches per repeat. The Sandnes Peer Gynt – our classic for Nordic knitting patterns – is a typical DK yarn with exactly the right twist for colorwork projects.
For children’s and baby clothing, DK is also an excellent weight: projects are manageable in size, the yarns are soft enough for sensitive skin, and the finished knitwear is durable enough for everyday use. For those with little time but who still want to knit: DK is also suitable for socks, hats, and scarves that finish much faster than in Fingering.
DK for Beginners
DK Weight is one of the best weights for knitting beginners. The needles are handy (3.5–4.5mm), the stitches are clearly visible, and projects grow quickly enough to keep motivation. A simple hat or shawl in DK is an ideal first project – and after finishing, you not only have something useful but also a good feel for gauge, Needle Size, and yarn structure.
