Worsted Weight: Quick to knit, warm to wear

Worsted Weight falls between DK and Aran – a medium to heavy yarn for Needle Size 4.5–5.5mm. Projects in Worsted grow quickly: hats in an evening, scarves in a weekend, simple sweaters in one to two weeks. This makes this weight especially popular for gifts, quick projects, and for anyone who sometimes wishes knitting would go a bit faster.

What is Worsted Weight?

“Worsted” in the English knitting system refers to a medium-weight yarn with a typical Meterage of about 180–220 meters per 100g. The standard needle size is 4.5–5.5mm, and the average stitch density in stockinette is about 16–20 stitches per 10cm. The term “Worsted” also describes a spinning method (Worsted-Spun) in yarn crafting, where the fibers are aligned parallel – resulting in a smooth, firm yarn with clear Stitch Definition. Not every Worsted Weight yarn is spun this way, but many of the best are.

Worsted for Beginners and Experienced Knitters

Worsted Weight is one of the best entry points for beginners: the needle size (4.5–5.5mm) is manageable, the stitches are clearly visible, and you quickly get a presentable result. At the same time, Worsted offers real value for experienced knitters: the Stitch Definition is clear and distinct, which highlights cables, Textured Stitch, and relief patterns especially well. Malabrigo Rios – one of our most popular Worsted yarns – is a prime example: hand-dyed, soft, with colors that look exceptionally beautiful in Worsted Textured Stitch patterns.

Worsted vs. Aran – what is the difference?

Worsted is a bit finer than Aran. Aran Weight (Needle Size 5–6mm) has a higher Meterage per 100g of about 150–180m and produces a slightly thicker knit fabric with the same needle. Worsted is the slimmer, more versatile option – big enough for quick projects, fine enough for textured patterns. If you’re unsure what you need: a Gauge swatch quickly shows whether the chosen yarn fits the pattern.
