Mohair: Warmth, Halo, and That Special Lightness
Mohair comes from the Angora goat – and anyone who has ever held a piece made from real Mohair immediately understands why it is so beloved. Feather-light, exceptionally warm, with a natural silk sheen and that characteristic Halo: the fine fluff that envelops the finished knitting like a veil. No other material creates this effect in the same way.
How Does Mohair Work in Knitting?
Mohair is usually knitted as a second strand – together with a base of Merino, Alpaca, or another wool. The combination results in pieces with incomparable texture: lightly draping, warm without weight, and with a soft romance that instantly makes a knit special. The classic: a fingering base (e.g., KFO Merino) with a lace Mohair (e.g., KFO Soft Silk Mohair), both strands on the needle at the same time – creating a quality you can’t achieve with a single yarn.
Mohair can also be knitted solo – the result is very loose and airy, especially with larger needles. For shawl and scarf designs, this can be exactly what’s desired: a light, draping piece made from almost nothing.
Kid Mohair vs. Regular Mohair
The finest and softest Mohair variant is Kid Mohair – obtained from young Angora goats during their first or second shearing. Kid Mohair has an even finer fiber diameter than regular Mohair, resulting in a particularly soft Halo and a silky feel. Superkid Mohair describes the very finest quality level – yarns with this label have the highest softness and the most beautiful Halo.
