Fingering Weight: The Weight for Socks, Shawls, and Delicate Projects
Fingering is the finest everyday Yarn Weight – finer than DK, heavier than Lace. Using Needle Size 2–3.5mm, it creates pieces with high Stitch Definition, clear patterns, and long Durability. Perfect for Socks, stolas, scarves, baby blankets, and anything that should be both delicate and durable.
Why is Fingering the Most Popular Weight?
Fingering Weight is the most versatile Yarn Weight in the knitting world. Most Sock Yarns are Fingering – and that’s no coincidence. The high Stitch Definition with thinner yarn results in a sturdy structure that withstands daily wear and frequent washing. At the same time, Fingering allows for fine colorwork: Stranded Colorwork, Lace inserts, and fading projects look especially beautiful in Fingering because the stitches are small enough to show details clearly.
Fingering Yarns are also excellent for lightweight summer sweaters and T-shirts. With finer Fibers (Merino, Silk), you get pieces with natural Drape and movement that coarser weights can’t achieve. If you want to knit a sweater that feels like a ready-to-wear garment, Fingering Weight is the right choice.
Meterage and Needle Size for Fingering
A typical Fingering Yarn has 200–420 meters per 50g or 100g. The standard Needle Size is 2–3.5mm, depending on fiber blend and desired Stitch Definition. A 100g ball of Fingering is enough for a complete pair of Socks (about 400m), a medium shawl (about 300–400m), or a child’s garment. For adult sweaters in Fingering, you’ll need more – plan 600–900m for simple models, 1000m+ for elaborate or larger sizes.

Fingering vs. Light Fingering – What’s the Difference?
Light Fingering lies between Lace and standard Fingering – finer and more transparent. Classic Fingering (also called 4-ply) is a bit sturdier and the more durable choice for most sock and shawl projects. If you want to knit finer, lighter socks, check out our Light Fingering Collection. Shipping from Munich, free within Germany for orders over €100.
