Sock Yarns: Wool that delivers what it promises

Socks are the most honest Knitting Project there is. They have to withstand friction, regulate moisture, survive a thousand washes – and still look good. What you need for that is a yarn truly made for socks: with a Nylon or Polyamide content for abrasion resistance, enough twist for clear Stitch Definition, and a fiber structure that holds up to daily wear.

What makes good Sock Yarn?

The classic Sock Yarn recipe: 75–90% Merino Wool, 10–25% Nylon or Polyamide. The wool provides Softness, moisture regulation, and that pleasant wearing feel that synthetic Fibers can’t achieve. The Nylon increases abrasion resistance – especially at the Heel and Toe, where most socks wear out first. All Sock Yarns at BONIFAKTUR contain this reinforcing component.

Also important: the twist of the yarn. A highly twisted Sock Yarn shows patterns clearly and is more Durable – ideal for Stranded Colorwork and textured designs. A softly twisted yarn is cozier but may define Stitches less clearly. Our article Sock Yarn: Durability & Construction explains the details.

Which Sock Yarns do we carry?

Hedgehog Fibres SOCK YARN (400m/100g, 90% Merino/10% Nylon, Fingering) – hand-dyed Sock Yarn from Ireland with deep, complex Colors that machine-dyed yarns can’t reach. Superwash and machine washable. For socks where color is the main feature.

Schoppel ZAUBERBALL® CRAZY (420m/100g, 75% Virgin Wool/25% Polyamide, Light Fingering) – the self-striping classic from Bavaria. The Colors change automatically while Knitting, making each pair unique. Durable, Superwash, Made in Germany. More in the Schoppel Brand Guide.

CoopKnits SOCKS YEAH! (422m/100g, Light Fingering) – a solid Sock Yarn with clear Stitch Definition and a wide Color selection, easy to knit.

Superwash or not?

Most Sock Yarns are Superwash treated – meaning the wool fibers have been treated so they don’t shrink and can be machine washed. This is practical for socks, which are washed often and quickly. More on the topic: Superwash vs. Non-Superwash helps with the decision.

New to knitting socks?

Knitting socks is easier than many think – and addictive. Our Knittipedia article Knitting Socks for Beginners explains the technique you need, which Needle Size makes sense, and how to approach Heel and Toe without fear.
