Fyberspates

British hand yarn dyeing with yarns made from luxury fiber blends – from feather-light alpaca-silk to fine merino blends.

What makes Fyberspates special

Fyberspates was founded in 2005 by Jeni Hewlett, at a time when hand-dyed yarns were still a niche product in the UK. What distinguishes the brand today is the passion for exceptional raw fibers and the art of hand-dyeing. Each yarn begins with carefully selected fibers – often luxury blends of Merino, Silk, Alpaca, and Mohair – and is then hand-dyed in small batches to create colors that radiate depth and complexity.

Fyberspates is not a mass brand. It is a small, carefully curated collection of yarns with character. The threads are spun and dyed in Peru – a process that requires patience and skill. The result: yarns that not only feel like luxury but truly are.

At BONIFAKTUR, we carry selected Fyberspates yarns – each a discovery for knitters seeking something special.

Cumulus – Clouds. A feather-light yarn that feels like little fluffy clouds. The baby Suri alpaca provides incredible Softness and a gentle halo around every stitch, while the mulberry silk adds Sheen and elegant Drape. A yarn for shawls that float instead of hang, or for sweaters where every fiber counts. An alternative to Mohair – without the Scratchy feeling, with double the softness.

Which Fyberspates yarn for which project?

For feather-light projects with Halo and dramatic Drape: Cumulus. For hand-dyed elegance in fingering weight that is also machine washable: Scrumptious. All Fyberspates yarns are unique in their coloring – no Ball is the same as another.

Care Tips

Cumulus (not superwash): Hand Wash only, lukewarm, with mild soap. Do not wring – squeeze out in a towel and dry flat. The Silk and Alpaca thank you with increased Sheen and Bloom.

Scrumptious (superwash): Machine Wash on wool program at 30°C possible, Hand Wash recommended. Squeeze out in a towel, dry flat.

General: Hand-Dyed Yarns can have slight shade variations between different dye baths. Always buy all Balls for a project from the same Dye Lot and alternate between Balls while Knitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Fyberspates come from?

Fyberspates is a British hand-dyeing yarn company, founded in 2005 by Jeni Hewlett. The raw fibers come from Peru, are milled there, and then hand-dyed in the UK – a process that can take weeks.

What is Cumulus?

Cumulus is an ultra-lightweight lace yarn made of 74% Baby Suri Alpaca and 26% mulberry silk. With about 150m per 25g, it is extremely economical for large projects – and the halo effect (the gentle shimmer around each stitch) makes every project visually unique. An alternative to Mohair, without the characteristic scratchy feel.

Is Fyberspates machine washable?

It depends on the yarn. Cumulus is not superwash and requires Hand Wash. Scrumptious is superwash and can be machine washed at 30°C – however, Hand Wash is recommended to preserve Sheen and Colors.

Why do Fyberspates yarns cost more than others?

Because quality has its price. Fyberspates uses luxury fibers (Baby Suri Alpaca, Bombyx Silk), painstaking hand-dyeing in small batches, and an independent European business model. Each ball is practically unique. This is not a mass product – it is craftsmanship.

Are Fyberspates yarns vegan?

No, the yarns contain animal fibers (Merino, Alpaca, Silk). However, they come from ethical sources and are carefully dyed by a small, independent company.
