Hedgehog Fibres

Hand-Dyed Yarns from Cork, Ireland – intense, distinctive, unmistakable.

What makes Hedgehog Fibres special

Hedgehog Fibres is a hand-dyeing yarn studio from Cork, Ireland – founded by Bénédicte Magnin-Robert. What sets the brand apart is its uncompromising philosophy on color design: no pastel compromises, no tame tones, only colors with attitude. Each yarn is hand-dyed in small batches, and every skein carries the uniqueness of the dyeing process within it.

The assortment focuses on a few, very well-made yarns – no oversupply, just the essentials. For knitters who have a clear stance when knitting and understand color not as an ingredient, but as a language. The yarns are high-quality, the color palettes poetic and headstrong.

At BONIFAKTUR we carry four Hedgehog yarns: the classic Sock Yarn, the textured Tweedy, the fine Skinny Singles, and the minis for color spots.

Care Tips

All Hedgehog Fibres yarns are superwash and can therefore be machine washed. Recommended: Hand Wash in cold water for maximum color retention. Machine Wash on the wool cycle at 30°C is possible but may affect colors in the long term. Always dry flat.

Important for hand-dyed yarns: Since each dye lot is hand-dyed, colors can vary from skein to skein – even within the same dye lot. For multicolored projects, buy all balls from the same dye lot and regularly alternate between balls while knitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Hedgehog Fibres come from?

Hedgehog Fibres is a hand-dyeing yarn studio from Cork, Ireland – known for intense, distinctive Colors and artisanal quality. Founded by Bénédicte Magnin-Robert, the Brand has developed into a sought-after dye studio within a few years.

What is the difference between Sock Yarn and Tweedy?

Sock Yarn is the classic yarn: 90% Merino/10% Nylon, intensely dyed, even texture, 400m/100g. Tweedy is a more sustainable yarn with a tweed effect: 50% Falkland Merino, 37.5% recycled wool, 12.5% colored thread remnants – these speckles give the yarn a slightly rustic texture and color effects. DK weight, 230m/100g.

Is one ball of Hedgehog Sock Yarn enough for a pair of socks?

Yes – 400m per 100g is usually enough for adult sock sizes. For very large sizes or knee-high socks, consider planning for a second ball.

Is Hedgehog Fibres machine washable?

Yes – all Hedgehog yarns are superwash. Machine Wash on the wool program at 30°C is possible. Hand Wash is recommended to preserve Colors in the long term.

Why do the Colors vary between different batches?

Because each batch is hand-dyed. Every hand, every dyeing day, every temperature in the water bath affects the result. Buy all balls of a project from the same Dye Lot – the Dye Lot number can be found on the label.

What is a tweed effect?

Tiny colored thread remnants from wool production are worked into the yarn in the Tweedy. These tiny speckles give the yarn texture and small color spots – an effect reminiscent of classic tweed fabric. Sustainable and beautiful at the same time.
