Holst Garn
Danish Yarns with unbeatable value for money, a huge color palette, and a secret: They get even better after the first wash.
Who is Holst Garn?
Holst Garn is a Danish yarn manufacturer that is increasingly gaining cult status in the European knitting scene – and for good reason. The yarns offer a combination of quality, color variety, and price that is unique in this form. While other brands charge three to four times as much for similar natural fiber quality, Holst remains consistently accessible.
What’s special about Holst: The yarns still contain spinning oil and excess dye when purchased. Only after the first wash do they reveal their true character – the yarn becomes softer, fuller, and develops a bloom that transforms the Stitch Definition. This "before-and-after effect" is a real experience for many knitters.
In addition, there is the huge color palette: Coast offers 88 colors, Supersoft over 100 – all in heathered, deep tones that harmonize wonderfully when knitting with two strands.
The three Yarns at Bonifaktur
Holst Garn Coast
Coast is a 2-ply wool-cotton yarn that feels like cotton but brings the warmth of Merino. Ideal For sensitive skin, baby clothes, and summer projects. The cotton fibers absorb color differently than the wool – creating the characteristic heathered, vibrant Colors. Machine Wash possible (cold wool cycle).
Tip: Knitting Coast double-stranded results in a wonderful DK weight. Combining two different Colors creates subtle color effects.
Holst Garn Supersoft
Supersoft was developed as a softer alternative to traditional Shetland yarn. The blend of Merino and Shetland wool combines the best of both worlds: the softness of Merino with the durability and character of Shetland. After the first wash, the yarn blooms noticeably and becomes noticeably softer.
The wool comes from New Zealand and Australia – exclusively from mulesing-free sources.
Holst Garn Titicaca
A delicate 2-ply Alpaca yarn that works well on its own or as a companion yarn. When knitted together with Coast or Supersoft, Titicaca adds softness and a light fluffiness – similar to Mohair, but with the distinctive hand feel of Alpaca. The alpaca fiber provides warmth without weight, is naturally water-repellent, and hypoallergenic.
Rule of thumb: When combining Titicaca with another yarn, add half a Needle Size.
Care: The first wash is crucial
All Holst Yarns contain spinning oil and excess color when purchased. The first wash is not optional – it is part of the experience. The yarn transforms: softer, fuller, more vibrant. We recommend knitting and washing a gauge swatch before starting your project.
Coast and Supersoft can be washed on the cold wool cycle. Please hand wash Titicaca at 30°C.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the spinning oil in Holst Garn?
Holst Garn still contains spinning oil and excess color when purchased. Both disappear during the first wash – and that’s exactly when the yarn reveals its true character: it becomes softer, fuller, and develops a beautiful Bloom. The first wash with Holst Garn is not optional but part of the experience.
Can I machine wash Holst Garn?
Yes – Supersoft and Coast can be washed in the cold wool program. For Titicaca (Alpaca), we recommend Hand Wash at 30°C.
How do I combine the different Holst yarns?
This is Holst's great strength: All Yarns are color-coordinated. Coast + Titicaca is a popular combination – the Cotton/wool blend of Coast gains extra Softness from the addition of alpaca.
Why is Holst Garn so affordable?
Holst Garn sells in large quantities (also on cones) and has an efficient, specialized production in Denmark. The Price is not a sign of lower quality – on the contrary. Holst is a hidden gem that is increasingly gaining cult status in the European knitting scene.
