Madelinetosh

Hand-Dyed in Texas, with over 180 Colors and a Color Depth you can feel. The cult yarn for everyone who takes Color seriously.

The story behind Madelinetosh

Madelinetosh was founded in 2006 by Amy Hendrix in Fort Worth, Texas – starting with a small Etsy shop and a vision: to dye yarns like paintings. What began as a search for the perfect color became the largest hand-dyeing studio in the USA. With over 1,700 colors in their legendary "Madalogue" library, Madelinetosh has revolutionized the craft of yarn dyeing.

The secret lies in the so-called glazing technique: multiple colors are applied by hand in thin layers, like glazes in oil painting. This creates real depth and dimension – shades that unfold stitch by stitch while knitting and appear differently in the light each time.

In 2019, Madelinetosh found a new home at Jimmy Beans Wool, where longtime fans Laura and Doug Zander continue the legacy. The quality and dyeing process have remained unchanged.

Madelinetosh TOSH MERINO LIGHT

100% Superwash Merino384m / 100gFingering / Light DKNeedle Size 3.5–3.75mmSingle Ply

The Tosh Merino Light is the heart of Madelinetosh and one of the most popular hand-dyed yarns worldwide – with over 135,000 projects on Ravelry. A single-ply fingering-weight made from 100% Superwash Merino with a generous meterage of 384m per 100g skein.

What makes this yarn so special is the way it carries color. Through the glazing process, each skein has a unique depth – from explosive brights to soft tonals to playful speckles. No skein is the same, and that’s exactly what makes it so appealing.

The Merino wool is soft, has a slight sheen, and is superwash – meaning it’s machine washable. Perfect for shawls, sweaters, socks, hats, and basically anything that deserves color.

Who is Madelinetosh for?

Madelinetosh is for knitters who see color as an essential part of their project – not just an afterthought. If you choose the color first when buying yarn and then the project, Tosh is your yarn. The single-ply structure gives a beautiful, even stitch definition with clear stitch definition, but it also shows every mistake. This is not a beginner’s yarn – it rewards careful work.

Tip for projects with multiple skeins: Since each skein is hand-dyed, color variations between skeins can occur. We recommend alternating skeins every 2 rows to create smooth transitions.

Why over 180 Colors?

Madelinetosh thrives on its color palette. From Antique Lace (a creamy, almost neutral white) to Jade (a deep, complex green) to Fluoro Rose (a bright, almost neon pink) – each color has its own personality. The color names are poetic, and so are the results.

At BONIFAKTUR, we carry one of the largest Madelinetosh selections in Germany, with over 180 colors permanently in stock. The skeins come directly to us – freshly dyed and lovingly packaged.

Care

Tosh Merino Light is superwash and can be washed in the cold wool program. For the longevity of the colors, we still recommend Hand Wash with mild Wool Wash. Dry flat. Do Not Tumble Dry – hand-dyed yarns deserve better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Madelinetosh so expensive?

Each skein is hand-dyed – using a complex multi-layer glazing technique, where color is applied like glazes in painting. This is not an industrial process, but true craftsmanship. Additionally: 100% superwash Merino in a quality that is second to none.

Can I wash Madelinetosh in the washing machine?

Yes – Tosh Merino Light is superwash. A cold wool cycle in the machine is possible. However, we still recommend Hand Wash to preserve the Color Depth in the long term. Hand-Dyed Yarns may lose some color during machine washing.

How do I deal with color differences between skeins?

With hand-dyed yarn, each skein is unique. We recommend alternating skeins every 2 rows in projects with multiple skeins to create smooth transitions instead of harsh color boundaries.

What Needle Size for Tosh Merino Light?

Recommended needle size is 3.5–3.75mm (US 4–5). For a firmer Stitch Definition (e.g., Socks), use 3.25mm; for looser Shawls, up to 4mm.

Does BONIFAKTUR have all Madelinetosh colors?

We carry over 180 Colors of the Tosh Merino Light – one of the largest selections in Germany. Most Colors are permanently in stock.
