Opal

German Sock Yarns with Artistic Souls – Color Gradients that Tell Stories.

What makes Opal special

Opal comes from Filsen on the Rhine – a German traditional company that has been producing Sock Yarns for decades and has built a loyal fan base. The brand is known for its thematic gradient color series: editions that transfer artworks onto Socks, address historical themes, or are dedicated to specific characters and moods.

The most famous and beloved series: Sock Yarn inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser – an official licensed collection in collaboration with the Hundertwasser Foundation. Each colorway is named after a work of art by the Austrian artist and carries the distinctive color and form language of his work translated into knitting yarn.

At BONIFAKTUR, we carry the Opal Sock Yarn inspired by Hundertwasser – a yarn that combines art history and craftsmanship, available in a growing selection of colorways.

In collaboration with the Hundertwasser Foundation, Opal has developed a sock yarn series that translates the color and form language of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser into knitting yarn. The color gradients are lively, distinctive, and clearly inspired by the artistic work – from the bright yellows to the earthy reddish browns and rich greens that characterize Hundertwasser’s paintings. With 25% Polyamide in the blend, this yarn is durable and hard-wearing for everyday use – ideal for socks, but also wonderful for shawls, hats, or accessories if you like colors that are more than just wool.

Care

Opal Sock Yarns are superwash – machine washable on the wool cycle at 40°C. Do Not Tumble Dry. Colors remain long-lasting and vibrant with gentle care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Opal Wool come from?

Opal is a German yarn brand from Filsen on the Rhine – known for high-quality Sock Yarns in thematic gradient color series, including the famous Hundertwasser series.

What is the Hundertwasser sock yarn from Opal?

An official licensed collection in collaboration with the Hundertwasser Foundation – Sock Yarns whose color gradients are inspired by artworks of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Each colorway is named after a work of art and features the typical Hundertwasser motifs and colors.

Is one ball of Opal enough for a pair of Socks?

Yes – 425m per 100g is enough for most adult sock sizes. For very large sizes or knee-high socks, we recommend planning for a second ball of yarn.
