Positive Ease

Hand-dyed merino yarns in single ply and Superwash – made with ease.

What makes Positive Ease special

Positive Ease makes hand-dyed merino wool yarns that harmonize with themselves and with others. The colorings are distinctive but not overpowering – yarns that can play the leading role in a project without overshadowing everything else.

The assortment at BONIFAKTUR includes two yarns in different textures: single-ply merino for maximum softness and Drape, as well as a superwash version for projects that need more durability. Both come in the typical Positive Ease hand-dyes – intense, complex, profound.

We love Positive Ease because the yarns have their own point of view and show themselves in an unadulterated way.

Which Positive Ease Yarn for which project?

Merino Singles: For shawls, stoles, scarves, and loosely draped sweaters – projects where Drape and Softness are the focus. Beautiful accessories that can be Hand Wash.

Pure Merino: For sweaters, jackets, shawls, and fine accessories – the more versatile option, superwash and more durable. Better for projects that need more everyday durability.

Knitting Singles: Tips for Getting Started

Single-ply yarns have a reputation for being difficult – but that's only partly true. They just require a bit of different attention: A blunt needle tip prevents the single strand from splitting. A consistent, loose stitch is more important than with plied yarns. And for projects that need to withstand a lot of friction, it's better to choose a plied yarn.

For shawls, scarves, and draping sweaters, singles are a revelation: They lie differently, drape differently, and show the hand-dyed color completely unaltered.

Care Tips

Merino Singles: Hand Wash with mild Wool Wash, lukewarm. Dry flat. Single-ply yarns are more delicate than plied yarns – gentle handling significantly extends their lifespan.

Pure Merino: Machine Wash on wool cycle at 30°C possible (Superwash), or Hand Wash. Roll in a towel, dry flat.

General: Hand-Dyed Yarns from different baths may have slight variations in shade – always buy all Balls for a project from the same Dye Lot and regularly alternate between Balls while Knitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Positive Ease mean in Knitting?

Positive Ease is the knitting term for extra width: When a sweater is knitted larger than the actual body measurements, it has Positive Ease. This results in a looser, more comfortable Fit. Negative Ease means the opposite – tighter than the body measurements, typical for close-fitting clothing.

Are Positive Ease Yarns machine washable?

It depends on the yarn. Pure Merino is superwash and machine washable at 30°C on the wool cycle. Merino Singles are not superwash and should be hand washed. Always check the label.

What projects are Positive Ease Merino Singles suitable for?

Especially for shawls, stoles, scarves, and loosely draping sweaters – projects where Drape and Softness are the focus. Not ideal for socks or heavily used accessories, as single-ply yarns are more delicate.

What projects are Positive Ease Pure Merino suitable for?

Pure Merino is versatile: sweaters, jackets, shawls, scarves, fine accessories. The superwash treatment makes it easy to care for, and the plied structure makes it more durable than singles.

What is the difference between Merino Singles and Pure Merino?

Merino Singles is single-ply, not superwash, even softer but more delicate. Pure Merino is plied, superwash (machine washable), more durable. For maximum Softness and Drape: Singles. For versatility and easy care: Pure Merino.
