Cotton Yarns: For Warm Days and Sensitive Skin

Cotton is the fiber for projects where wool would be too warm, too heavy, or too irritating. Baby clothes, summer blouses, washcloths, airy shawls – cotton cools, breathes, and feels gentle on the skin. Especially babies and people with sensitive skin appreciate this. And: cotton is easy to care for. Most cotton yarns are machine washable, many even at higher temperatures.

Properties of Cotton Yarn in Knitting

What cotton cannot do: spring back. It has practically no Elasticity, feels heavier in hand than wool, and absorbs moisture differently – it cools when wet, which is an advantage for summer clothing, but can make knitting long projects more tiring than with springy wool.

For knitted pieces with a lot of texture – Cables, reliefs, Aran patterns – pure cotton yarn is less suitable because stitch definition suffers from the lack of Elasticity. Blended yarns are a better choice here. The Cotton Merino from Knitting for Olive combines Organic Cotton with Merino Wool: the result is a yarn that is cooler and lighter than pure Merino but has enough springiness for beautiful, textured stitches.

Pure Linen yarn like BC Garn Lino (100% Linen) goes one step further: Linen cools even more than cotton, gives the yarn a firm structure, and becomes softer and more pleasant with every wash. Ideal For summer tops and bags.

Organic Cotton and GOTS Certification

When it comes to cotton yarns, it’s worth looking at certification, especially if the yarn is intended for baby clothes or people with sensitive skin. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies not only that the cotton was grown organically but also checks the entire supply chain – from harvest to finished yarn. A GOTS label means: no harmful pesticide use, no critical auxiliaries in processing, and fair working conditions. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is another important certification that checks for harmful substances in the finished yarn.

Which Projects Are Suitable for Cotton Yarns?

Cotton is excellent for summer tops, blouses, T-shirts, and vests made from lightweight yarn. For baby clothes and children’s products – washcloths, pacifier chains, bibs – cotton is the first choice because it is well tolerated and hygienically easy to care for. Bags, baskets, and mats also benefit from the Shape Retention and durability of the cotton fiber.
