Merino Wool: The Most Versatile Yarn There Is

Merino Wool is not just any wool. It is the result of centuries of breeding, where the scale structure of the fiber has become so fine that it no longer feels scratchy – but silky. Soft enough for baby clothes. Temperature-regulating enough for underwear. Colorful and versatile enough that Merino Wool is the most knitted yarn worldwide.

What Makes Merino Wool So Special?

The key difference from ordinary Virgin Wool lies in the fiber diameter. Merino Wool typically has a fiber diameter under 24 microns – for comparison: a human hair is 60–80 microns thick. This fineness prevents the scratchiness on the skin that many people associate and fear with wool. True Merino feels soft even for sensitive skin.

Merino can also absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet – and releases it again when the environment becomes drier. This makes Merino sweaters natural temperature regulators: warm when it’s cold, less stuffy than synthetics when it gets warmer. And: Merino naturally neutralizes odors. Merino pieces need to be washed significantly less often than cotton or synthetic clothing.

After the first wash, Merino develops the so-called Bloom: the fibers loosen slightly, making the finished knit softer and fluffier. With good Merino yarns, this is not a loss of quality but the opposite – the fabric improves with every wash.

Superwash or Not – Which Is Better?

Superwash Merino is treated so that the scales do not felt – the yarn is machine washable. This is practical for socks, baby clothes, and everyday projects. Non-Superwash Merino has a more natural feel but requires Hand Wash. Which fits better depends on the project and your daily life.
