De Rerum Natura

French Merino Wool with soul – from Provence to your hands, with short distances and full respect.

What makes De Rerum Natura special

De Rerum Natura was founded in 2012 by Solenn Couix-Loarer in Toulouse – with a clear vision: to produce yarns that are soft enough for children's skin, look beautiful, and can be traced back to the sheep. The brand processes wool from Mérinos d’Arles from Provence – one of the few French Merino sheep breeds whose fibers, averaging 21.5 microns, are among the finest in Europe.

What sets De Rerum Natura apart is the consistently short supply chain: the wool comes from France and Portugal, is washed in Belgium or Italy, and spun and dyed in France. All Yarns are mulesing-free and come from herds that are partly kept in transhumance – the traditional seasonal grazing practice.

At BONIFAKTUR, we carry Ulysse – the versatile sport yarn from the brand. A yarn where you can feel the origin: in the softness, in the muted, natural Colors, and in the knowledge that nothing here is left to chance.

Ulysse is the yarn that made De Rerum Natura famous. The woolen-spun processing gives the yarn a special airiness: it is lighter and warmer than you would expect from Sport Weight. The Stitch Definition has a gentle, slightly heathered character, which comes from the natural blend of French and Portuguese merino fibers. 33 Colors at BONIFAKTUR – from muted natural tones to bright plant-based colors. Excellent for sweaters, shawls, cardigans, and all projects that combine Softness and structure.

Care

Hand Wash in warm water with Wool Wash, dry flat. Do not rub or stretch. Ulysse is not superwash – machine washing may cause felting. For strong colors, the Brand recommends testing colorfastness on a Gauge before combining light and dark colors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Wool from De Rerum Natura come from?

The Merino Wool comes from two sources: white Mérinos d’Arles from Provence (France) and black Merino from the Alentejo Valley (Portugal). The herds are partly kept in transhumance – a traditional seasonal grazing practice. All fibers are mulesing-free.

Is Ulysse superwash?

No. Ulysse is not superwash-treated and must be hand washed (or carefully machine washed after a gauge swatch test). The natural wool surface is preserved, which gives the yarn its special Hand Feel and Warmth.

What does "woolen spun" mean?

Woolen spun is a spinning technique where the fibers lie in different directions – unlike the smoother worsted spun. This results in a lighter, warmer yarn with a softer, slightly heathered Stitch Definition. Ulysse is 2-ply woolen spun.

What is Ulysse best suited for?

As a sport-weight yarn, Ulysse is versatile: sweaters, cardigans, shawls, and accessories. The yarn thickness and soft hand feel make it especially good for close-fitting garments that are meant to be worn all day. It is not suitable for socks (no polyamide, not superwash).
