Rowan
British knitting culture since 1978 – classics that never age.
What makes Rowan special
Rowan is a British yarn brand from West Yorkshire, England, founded in 1978. The brand has established itself over decades as one of the most influential names in the premium knitting segment – not through fashion changes, but through absolute quality and design integrity.
Rowan stands for a special design understanding: classic British knitting tradition meets contemporary aesthetics and material expertise. The brand works with designers like Kaffe Fassett and has made a name for iconic patterns and wonderful campaign images – pictures that show a knitted piece as part of a whole world.
At BONIFAKTUR we carry Rowan Felted Tweed – the brand’s flagship yarn. A yarn that has hardly changed in decades because it hardly can get any better.

Rowan Felted Tweed
Felted Tweed is Rowan's iconic yarn and one of the classics in the knitting segment. The refined blend of Merino (for structure), Alpaca (for Softness), and Viscose (for fine Sheen) is lightly felted – resulting in the characteristic Tweed finish with typical colorful flecks that give the yarn natural depth and texture. With this yarn, you don’t need a complex pattern: simple structures, Fair Isle patterns, or Aran cables become a statement through the Tweed texture itself. The result is a fabric that is both rustic and elegant. Available in over 70 muted, nature-inspired Colors – from moss green to mist gray, from heather blue to rust red.
Care
Rowan Felted Tweed is not superwash and requires gentle care. Hand Wash at 30°C with cold water, do not rub or wring. Dry flat, no tumble dryer. The slightly felted yarn is sensitive to heat and friction – gentle care preserves the color and the characteristic texture of the fabric.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Rowan come from?
Rowan was founded in 1978 in West Yorkshire, England, and has since become one of the most influential brands in the premium knitting segment. The brand is known for high-quality yarns and patterns with a strong design signature, shaped by British tradition and design integrity.
What makes Felted Tweed so special?
Felted Tweed is not a simple blend – each component has a purpose. The Merino provides structure, the Alpaca adds soft liveliness, and the Viscose brings a fine sheen. Together, through slight felting, a yarn is created that is beautiful from within – without needing a complex pattern. The Tweed flecks are not printed on but are part of the fiber itself.
Is Rowan Felted Tweed machine washable?
No. Felted Tweed is not superwash and requires Hand Wash. This makes it more challenging for everyday use, but it also gives you something in return: After proper Hand Wash, the yarn develops a beautiful Bloom – the fibers relax, and the fabric becomes even softer and more three-dimensional.
What projects is Felted Tweed suitable for?
Felted Tweed is a versatile DK-weight yarn. Sweaters, cardigans, scarves, accessories – everything is possible. Ideal For anyone who loves classic, timeless pieces. Because the Tweed texture is already decorative, simple patterns and straightforward cuts work wonderfully as well.
